San Diego RIMS Board Member Spotlight: Jodi Lvov (By Katie Johanski)
J
Let’s start with the name. Lvov (pronounced luh-VOHF) is a Ukrainian surname that Jodi proudly adopted from her husband, Kirill.
Before Lvov, Jodi was a Sanchez, born in Chicago proper, where she lived within earshot of the train, but was lucky enough to have a backyard. A naturally social kid, Jodi grew up playing sports, reading voraciously, and dutifully following the rules. She attended Resurrection High, an all-girls Catholic school where she was active in drama and was nominated as a peer meditator, a role she took on whole heartedly. Being able to bring people together to find common ground is a skill she still values and utilizes today. During high school she also worked as a receptionist at Supercuts, a job that eventually and indirectly led her to a promising career in risk management.
Jodi began her college career at Eastern Illinois University as an early childhood education major, dreaming of becoming a kindergarten teacher. But one creative writing course shifted her path entirely. Inspired by professors and peers alike, she switched to English and fell in love with poetry and perspective - learning to slow down, observe, and appreciate how others experience the world.
Her worldview was also shaped by loss; Jodi’s father passed away from heart complications during her teen years. That experience instilled in her a deep “life is fleeting” mindset, motivating her to live fully and authentically. After graduating in 2004, she followed her mother to San Diego, where her mom had remarried a man whose résumé reads like an action novel: NORAD veteran, Yankees pitcher, and war hero. Jodi worked at a travel agency for a year but quickly realized she needed a change.
In search of community and inspiration, Jodi moved to San Francisco and enrolled in the New College of California, where she earned her Master of Arts in Poetics. Nestled in the heart of the Mission District, the tiny school gave Jodi two years of growth, surrounded by creatives and thinkers who reaffirmed her love for words, people, and living in the moment. While working café shifts and salon front desk jobs, Jodi landed a receptionist role at Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction and her journey into risk management began. She accepted a temporary assignment reviewing Certificates of Insurance (COIs), quickly earned a promotion, and never looked back. Always eager to grow, she earned her Construction Risk Insurance Specialist (CRIS) certification, became a notary, and eventually moved up to Compliance Supervisor, where she led and trained a growing team.
Two years ago, Jodi moved back to San Diego to help open Hathaway Dinwiddie’s new Del Mar office. She is now a Senior Insurance Administrator, juggling Owner-Controlled Insurance Programs (OCIPs), company insurance management and leading a small but mighty team. Hathaway Dinwiddie has been building the future for over a century, with high-profile projects like Stanford University, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, Disney’s Space Mountain, and the Honda Center. Their company motto - “If you can make it better, make it so” – is one Jodi fully embraces.
She credits much of her professional growth to her longtime mentor, Ann Parnigoni, a brilliant risk leader and Board President of the Golden Gate RIMS Chapter. Jodi is excited about what lies ahead, but for now, she’s deeply fulfilled and committed to growing with Hathaway Dinwiddie for as long as they will have her.
Jodi and Kirill proudly serve as Auntie and Uncle to 9-year-old Lucas, a Pokémon-loving, video game-obsessed whirlwind of energy. They’re slowly converting him to shooting pool, mini golf, bocce ball, Monopoly, and full-blown dance parties. After 16 years without a car in San Francisco, the couple now treasures spur-of-the-moment drives, choosing a direction and discovering new corners of San Diego. Jodi is passionate about horror films, painting, reading and writing poetry. Raised by artists and vibrant women who taught her to show up, express herself, and embrace individuality, Jodi is bubbly, inquisitive, talkative, and always ready to listen to someone’s story.
Jodi joined San Diego RIMS two years ago and now serves as a Director-at-Large on the Board. She thrives on connecting with professionals in the field and uncovering the “why” behind what they do. Early on, support from IRMI helped her find her footing, and now she’s eager to pay it forward and help others build their careers in risk.
Fun Fact: Although Jodi is a rule-follower and her career is rooted in compliance and contracts, don’t be surprised if you spot her name in a poetry collection or on the walls of a local art exhibit. Jodi is published in Beatitude, a legendary zine dating back 50 years that celebrates writing from modern-day beatnik rebels, keeping the spirit of freeform creative expression alive. With a lion’s heart, an artist’s soul, and a risk manager’s eye for detail, Jodi Lvov is someone you’ll be glad you met.
