President's Message

San Diego's Risk & Insurance Management Community

President’s Message,

What a whirlwind year.  I want to thank our current board for all of their hard work this year and thanks in advance for your 2025 board with two new directors, Kristina Dethmanivong and Jeff Hobbs and we welcome back Duane Johnson as an Associate Advisor. Special thanks to Jose Lugo for his seven years of service to the board, we hope you will stay active in the chapter.  We appreciate Phil Cordiero’s year of service and wish him the best in his new endeavors.  A full listing of the 2025 board can be found on our website www.sandiegorims.org

We had two educational sessions this quarter.  In October, Al Haverkamp of Haverkamp Law did a presentation on vertical exhaustion.  Al covered what it means for insureds in continuing loss cases.

In November, Howard Franco and Sidney Price of Collins & Collins did a presentation on Embracing the Future Across Generations. They addressed how mentoring today embraces the future.  Why successful mentoring programs can embrace a 2-way street between generations and how results show greater organizational stability and growth.

Not so educational, but a lot of fun, was our Holiday Luncheon.  The event was held at Tidal, with a trivia competition, sponsored by Pettit, Kohn, Ingrassia, Lutz & Dolin.  The hosted bar was sponsored by Origami.  Thank you to our sponsors, a good time was had by all.  Thank you to all that brought a raffle prize, and a special thanks to Lan Nguyen and Kristina Dethmanivong for all of their work to make the event possible.

In the new year we are back to education.  In January, (1/16/25), Ryan Nell, of Pettit Kohn, will present an Employment Law Update.  In February, (2/27/25), Dr. Debra Dupree will present on Navigating the Interactive Process. Both of these presentations you will want to invite your HR team to.  For March, (3/27/25), Steve Robles will speak on Career Advancement Tips for Risk Professionals.  Registration for these events can be found on our website.

Save the date for RIMS on the Mall, April 8-9, 2025.  This is an opportunity to speak with our legislators about our concerns with unintended consequences of proposed legislation.  I hope you will consider joining this group for a pilgrimage to our state capital.

A warm welcome to the following members who joined San Diego RIMS in the last 3 months:

Student Member:

Hannah Garton, Risk Management Intern, Housing Authorities Risk Retention Pool

Associate Members:

Andrea Contreras, Sales Director, Athens Administrators

Kimberly Servande, Compliance Analyst, The ALS Group

Brett Bittner, President, CI&S Investigations

In closing I want to wish you all a great holiday season and happy prosperous new year.

Respectfully submitted,

Cheryl Berman
